British Enfield Bayonet Scabbard Modified for US 1855 Bayonet. I purchased this Enfield scabbard (and a British Cap & Waiting Pouch listed separately), recently and was told both were part of a large purchase of accoutrements from England. In April of 1861, Governor John A. Andrews of Massachusetts sent Francis Boardman Crowninshild to purchase 25,000 stands of arms and equipment. Included in this purchase approximately 10,000 sets of British made accoutrements, used with Enfield rifles. The bayonet has been modified from use with the Enfield bayonet, to now except the standard Federal Model 1855 bayonet. This was done by cutting the slot on the brass throat to accommodate the ’55 pattern shape. As the brass finial is a standard Federal pattern which appears to be a period addition. The scabbard worn on the belt with the British pattern frog. The overall length is 19 inches. The leather is marked with the British Board Arrow with “WD” stamped below (War Department). Francis Boardman Crowninshield was a former Speaker of the Mass. House of Representatives, a member of a prominent business family in New England, with great business connections. Most capable to hand this matter, he went to England to procure the State’s military needs, having to compete with other states in the Union, as well as buyers for the Confederacy. The bayonet is an 1855 Bayonet, marked “US” on the blade, and is in very good condition. This I added to protect the leather scabbard, and to complete the look. A scarce accoutrement.
