Description It’s odd that in all the years of collection and dealing in military items, this is the first time I’ve run across one of these Sterling Silver bayonet letter openers. Patterned after the 1905 Springfield Bayonet, this 9 inch long souvenir is an accurate model of the original. The grips appear to be painted in a wood grain, and probably on silver. The guard is marked with the Sterling mark and maker’s cartouches, and a number on the other side being, “8782.” Hard to believe that many were made! Cased in medium blue cloth cover (with wear) and a single clasp, and having a silk lid interior and tan colored custom fitted velvet base. A thick paper card tells about the commemorative and its purpose for being made. The bayonet weighs 3.2 oz. Great little miniature souvenir of the Great War.
