Description Patented by Dr. Edward Maynard, Massachusetts Arms of Chicopee Falls produced 20,202 of these .50 caliber carbines between 1863 and 1865. The Second Model Carbine, aka. “Model 1863”, featured a 20” round barrel with octagonal breech. Blued finish with case hardened frame, walnut stock made without forearm, and iron butt plate. Right side of frame stamped “MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS.”; left side stamped “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE./MAY 27, 1851/DEC. 6, 1859”. Three-position rear sight; blade front sight. This example having had the saddle bar and ring removed, as often found. Barrel retaining much of its original blue, the frame with dark patina and faint case hardening, with patches of pitting. Hammer holds on half cock, but not full cock. Overall length 36 3/4”. These carbines were known to have been carried by the 9th and 11th Indiana and 11th Tennessee Union cavalry regiments.
