DescriptionEchelon derives from the French ‘echelle’ for ‘ladder’, a meaning which contains both ideas of ladder formation, and of ladder sequencing, or hierarchy – both meanings appropriate for a road race. The group is in formation, and those at the top of the ladder lead, those on rungs below do the chasing. And here you get all the higgledy piggledy yet miraculously balanced sense of the cyclists, working individually, but very much also as a group. An exceptional print.
