DescriptionGouache on paper (1956). This is a composite view of Boscastle, a fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall. Boscastle is a natural inlet, but harbour walls, evident here, were once built, and allowed for the import of limestone and the export of slate. In so many of Yates’s paintings there is a strong sense of place: this is a village with rows of small craft, nets and masts; a boat rests upon the beach awaiting its summer repair; there are ricks of corn and serrated furrows of a ploughed field; and high above the village the Cornish sun presides, flooding the scene and casting a shadow of striking complimentary yellows purples and blacks.
