Cufflinks For A British Naval Officer Serving Aboard HMS Rodney- BISMARCK Related. The brass cufflinks are made in two sectons held together by a short chain; front section has the logo of the HMS Rodney, and the other 5 diagonal stripes of red and blue. Approximately 7/8 inches high. No hallmarks. Fine condition. HMS Rodney’s fame arose with her involvement in the pursuit, and destruction of the German battleship Bismarck in late May, 1941. Rodney, along with HMS King George V., and several other cruisers hit Bismarck repeatedly with their heavy guns, but Rodney was the only ship to hit the German battleship with torpedo essentially ending the battle. After the engagement, Rodney’s crew noted that very few of the glasses and dishes were unbroken, due to the constant firing upon the enemy, a credit to the crew’s bravery in this important sea battle. After the battle, Rodney was ordered to the Boston Navy Yard for extensive repairs, and her crew sent out to spend time with New England families during their stay in the States. It is likely that these cufflinks were given out to someone in the states, as they were found a few years ago in the US. HMS Rodney played a major role of supporting the Normandy landings, and would later become the flagship of the British Home Fleet until she was scrapped in 1948. An historic set of cufflinks, still meant to be worn, so the story can be shared. Show them off!
