Rare CDV of a Civil War Cavalryman with Two Joslyn Resolvers. This trooper in typical cavalry uniform, wear his shell jacket and shoulder scales, saber belt, holster and cap box. His left hand rests on the hilt of his 1840 heavy Dragoon saber. The neatest feature is are the two Joslyn revolvers tucked in his belt. The side hammer of one of the revolvers can easily be seen. About 3000 Joslyn revolvers were produced during the war, and most of the 1100 purchased by a New York retailer from the Joslyn firm were nearly all bought by the state of Ohio, and issued to the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry. Flayderman’s mentions that a few states purchased Joslyns in limited quantities; those being Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, and Minnesota. Non were purchased by the Government. This soldier has only one holster visible, so assumingely the second Joslyn likely was borrowed for the photograph from a nearby fellow trooper. Light soiling overall, but a clear images showing these scarce Joslyns in a photograph in the period.
