DescriptionWatercolour and pen and ink, originally for ‘This is London’ (1959). Fleet Street is named after the River Fleet, London’s largest underground river, but up until quite recently it was the street of the papers, with offices for the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Express and the Belfast Telegraph (as here depicted). All of these papers, along with Reuters, have left the street to take up offices elsewhere, but the name continues as a virtual metonym for the British Press. In this print we see the offices, but it is our vantage point which is most attractive: we are perched at the front of a green double decker bus and approaching us and directly in front we have lines of iconic red double decker busses.
